Chapter Ten

“Happy birthday, Alice.” Harper sat upright on the side of their bed as she presented a small, wrapped package and envelope from behind her back.

“Aw, thanks, Harps, you shouldn’t have.” In one motion, Alice had the paper ripped off and the dainty box opened.

“Ha! I love them.” Alice placed the dangling pink flamingo earrings in her ears. “How do I look?” She flipped her head from side to side.

“You look fabulous.”

“I feel fabulous.” She giggled as she pinched a card out of the envelope. The cover design was of a hot air balloon and the inside was blank—except for Harper’s signature—giving no hint to the meaning behind the design. Alice cocked her head.

“For your birthday I’m taking you on a hot air balloon ride in Sedona.”

Alice squealed as she pulled Harper into a tight hug. “When we get back home,” Harper said as she wiggled out of Alice’s constricting grip. “We’ll book a time and head on up.” Two months ago, one of the women from their book club talked endlessly about the balloon ride she and her girlfriend took over the red rocks of Sedona. Since then, Alice had mentioned more than once that she had put that adventure high on her bucket list.

“Breakfast in five minutes,” Chelsea announced from behind the door.

“Be right out,” Alice called back before slumping back onto her bed. “Harper, Chelsea’s awesome. She cooks, keeps her place tidier than I ever could, is sexy as hell, and she smolders enough to start a fire. Why you aren’t falling over yourself to make something happen with her is a mystery to me.” Alice poked at Harper with her toe. “Hell, if I didn’t think you’d stab me in my sleep, I’d make a pass at her myself.”

“Don’t, Alice.” Harper had heard this from Alice more than once over the past few days. Even though they hadn’t seen much of each other because Alice had been living the high life with Oliver, when they had, lounging in bed before heading off to their respective days, Alice had been relentlessly cheerleading for Chelsea. It was especially weird since only a few days ago, she had been just as persistent in pushing Harper toward Laney. “I told you, it’s not like that. We’re friends.”

“It’s not like that, but it could be. I’ve seen how you look at her, and how she looks at you. And watching you two dance around each other is like reading a slow burn romance novel. And you know how much those books drive me nuts. If something sexy hasn’t happened between the main characters by page twenty, I’m yawning.”

“This isn’t a romance novel.” Harper ran a frustrated hand through her hair. “Besides, we’ve barely seen each other since Whitstable. I told you it kind of ended badly that night, and I think she thinks I’ll be better off with Laney. And anyway, this was never going to work. We live on different continents, and we’re different people. Maybe we always were.”

“I’m not convinced.
